Of the four of us, Edward is the youngest in years, and the heart of our family. His small pale lips are quick to turn up to a smile, though it is more often than not, accompanied by a shrug and a turning away of the gaze that I have tried unsuccessfully to train out of him for greater than a decade. You may think I value him no more than the hound that scampers at his side, that I seek only to make him more useful to my own ends, or to subvert his nature to make him less embarrassing to our House. In truth, however, I worry for him. Mettle makes the man. Our journey is not without danger, but I have brought Edward along in an attempt to stiffen his spine, perchance to learn by watching my comport of command with the men. As I watch him on deck laughing at Talbot’s antics, I see my mother in his clear eyes and curly straw locks, but it is clear to all that he is the inferior man.
But now the sky darkens and the sea spits promise of the Devil’s plans. The call grows for me to take the helm. Watch, Edward. Watch and learn.
