Once upon a time, when the world was young, and trees could talk, the Sun and the Moon were alive.
Now, the Sun desperately loved the Moon, but it could not move from its path. Its job was too important, and bringing light to the world had to come first.
Over time, this made the Moon very sad, doubting its own worth as work always came first for the Sun. They grew worried when the Sun did not visit them as much as they would like.
So the Moon asked the Sun, “Would you still love me, even if my face changed?”
And the Sun replied, “Yes. I will always love you no matter how you look.”
And the Moon asked, “Would you love me if I was a rabbit or a baboon or a deer?”
And the Sun replied, “Yes. I would love you even if you were an ibis or a serpent or an old man.”
The Moon smiled and shifted in it’s path. If the Sun could not move, perhaps the Moon could be more flexible.
Shadows played across its face. “Then if you cannot come to me, I shall visit you. And the world will just have to deal with you having some time off.”
The Sun replied, “I would like that.”
And so it came to be that eclipses came to the world, a few moments of darkness when the Sun and the Moon could forget about work for a short while.
Which is why we honor them and do no work during eclipses.
