There are twenty-four Cards of the Arcana, each with its own meaning when drawn upright or reversed. You may find cards sometimes reverse their orientation of their own volition, this is never to be disregarded. Shuffle as you will. A fanned choosing and three card spread is most common in Nighthaven.
The Fool
A brave adventurer sets out on a new journey, sword held carelessly over their shoulder. They stand dangerously near the edge of a cliff, risking a fall as their eyes search the horizon. A luna moth accompanies them, but is the sun rising or setting over their undertaking?
- Upright: choices and new paths
- Reversed: recklessness or confusion
The Magician
A hooded silhouette cradles a floating grimoire; green flames spit from the tome’s open pages. The figure’s focus is consumed by the great and terrible power while their back is turned to a dawnlit window.
- Upright: power and manifestation
- Reversed: trickery or lack of control
High Priestess
A bejeweled figure is lit against a night sky, eyes glowing and arms outstretched as if seeing something through a mist. Three braziers are before her, two burn with fire, but the center is yet unlit, or has already been extinguished.
- Upright: mystery and intuition
- Reversed: doubt or repression
The Empress
A ruler in velvet finery and golden crown holds a single star in her hand, the power to crush or cultivate. Her eyes drift to the side, but the object of her gaze is beyond sight; behind her a crescent moon hangs in a scarlet backdrop.
- Upright: life and nurturing
- Reversed: dependence or neglect
The Emperor
A ruler in a three pronged crown stands atop a battlement, dark crenelations to either side bolster his position. He raises his arms, either in command or despair, as a shaft of golden light shines from the heavens.
- Upright: authority and power
- Reversed: tyranny or instability
The Hierophant
A plainly dressed king stands aloft holding a golden hammer with a citadel reflected in its surface; many faces raise up to him, hope in their eyes. Scaffolding in the background either supports new efforts or repairs something broken.
- Upright: spiritual wisdom or conformity
- Reversed: rebellion or a free spirit
